Desde tempranas horas, se realizan por todo Estados Unidos las elecciones de medio término, para elegir cargos legislativos, al menos 40 gobernadores entre otros asuntos relacionados a normativas. El migrante Guillermo Castillo, quien vive en Kentucky, entrevistó a dos ciudadanos estadounidenses quienes expresaron la importancia del proceso electoral de este martes y cómo podría afectar a futuro a ese país.
Judy Schwank, una abogada que colabora y apoya a la comunidad migrante en Kentucky expresó:
Es un día fresco pero soleado en Kentucky este 6 de noviembre de 2018. Día de las elecciones. Esta elección puede ser la más importante de todas. Básicamente, va a dar una de cómo se siente la gente en este país acerca del Presidente Donald Trump y sus políticas. Trump ha creado un grupo base de seguidores que son rabiosos en su posición en la forma de tratar humanamente a los inmigrantes. Tenemos un presidente en este país que ha tenido DOS esposas inmigrantes, una madre inmigrante y al menos dos abuelos inmigrantes, y aun así es el Presidente más anti-inmigrante de este país en mi vida de más de 70 años.
Nuestro país está en un lío. Todo esto es la creación de este hombre loco que está en la Casa Blanca y sus seguidores. La mayoría de ellos son personas sin educación o con poca educación. O los hombres blancos que temen una “América de tez morena”. Cada persona negra o morena que encuentran es una amenaza para su sentido de auto superioridad. Quieren volver al tiempo de los años 50 con seguridad y estarían felices si estuviéramos en los 1850.
Lo que suceda hoy en las elecciones será algo con lo que tendremos que convivir durante muchos años. Las personas elegidas hoy y las de 2020 controlarán la redistribución de distritos electorales en los próximos años. La gestión de los gritos o la colocación de los grupos de personas correctos en un área de votantes específica para obtener los resultados que desea han durado durante años en los EE. UU. Permite que los votantes de ciertas áreas diluyan su poder de voto al colocar grupos de ellos en áreas principalmente blancas. Evita que el grupo desfavorecido pueda elegir a alguien de su propia raza u origen étnico porque su poder de grupo de votación disminuye. Si bien la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos ha anulado algunos casos de manipulación ilegal, se requieren años para que esos casos se tramiten en los tribunales. Debido a eso, se puede hacer mucho daño si un partido en el poder decide marginar a ciertos votantes. El Partido Republicano ha sido notorio por hacer esto en el pasado.
Pase lo que pase hoy, estamos sentados en lo que se siente como un polvorín de emociones en este país. Solo el tiempo dirá si las cosas eventualmente se calmarán, o si Estados Unidos está al borde de tal cambio que la gente no puede adaptarse. Un grupo se va a poner muy contento al final de este día y el otro estará muy molesto. Ahora ha pasado a estar afectando a miembros de la familia que tienen diferentes puntos de vista sobre las cosas, los amigos de muchos años ya no se hablan entre sí, e incluso está creando problemas en los sitios de trabajo donde la política se discute hasta el punto de no solo abuso verbal, pero a veces altercados físicos. Nunca he visto las cosas como son hoy. Todo por un solo hombre.
Por su parte, Jan Albert indicó:
¿Por qué votar? ¡Tu voto importa! Tu voto puede hacer una diferencia para un candidato. Puedes votar por el candidato que mejor refleje sus creencias. Eso significa que puedes votar por todos los Republicanos o todos los Demócratas o por cualquier otro partido. También puedes repartir tu voto en varios candidatos y votar por las personas que mejor lo representen sean Republicanos, Demócratas, Partido Verde, Libertario o Independiente. Votar te da una voz en lo que sucede en la vida diaria. Así que vota.

It is a cool but sunny day in Kentucky today. November 6, 2018. Election day. This election may be the most important one ever. It is essentially going to give a public view of how the people in this country feel about Donald Trump and his policies. Trump has created a base group of followers who are rabid in there opposition to the humane treatment of immigrants. We have a President in this country who has had TWO immigrant wives, an immigrant mother, and at least two immigrant grandparents, and yet he is the most anti-immigrant President of this country in my lifetime of more than 70 years.
Our country is in a mess. It is the creation of this one crazy man who is in the White House and his followers. The majority of them are uneducated or poorly educated people. Or white men who are afraid of the “browning of America”. Every black or brown person they meet is a threat to their sense of self superiority. They want to go back to the time of the 1950’s for sure and would be happy if we were back in the 1850’s.
What happens today in the elections will be something we have to live with for many years. The people elected today and the ones in 2020 will control the redistricting of voter areas for the next few years. Gerrymandering, or putting the right groups of people in a specified voter area to get the results you want has gone on for years in the U.S. It allows voters in certain areas to have their voting power diluted by putting groups of them in primarily white areas. It keeps the disadvantaged group from being able to elect someone of their own race or ethnicity because their voting group power is lessened. While the Supreme Court of the United States has overturned some cases of gerrymandering, it takes years for those cases to proceed through the courts. Because of that, a lot of damage can be done if a party in power chooses to marginalize certain voters. The Republican Party has been notorious about doing this in the past.
Whatever happens today, we are sitting on what feels like a powder keg of emotion in this country. Only time will tell if things will eventually calm down, or if the United States is on the verge of such a change that people can not adapt to it. One group is going to be very happy at the end of this day and the other is going to be very upset. It has now gone over to where it is affecting family members who have different views on things, friends of many years are no longer speaking to each other, and it is even creating problems at work sites where politics is discussed to the point of not only verbal abuse, but sometimes physical altercations. I have never seen things the way they are today. All because of one man.
